Mamak, Hay Market, Sydney CBD

There is often a very long queue outside Malaysian favourite -  Mamak.  Otherwise it’s  a tight spaced restaurant full of customers. Mamak is located on Goulburn St in China Town and probably best to get there via Central Station.

As you walk in, you can see all the great roti creations being prepared that really make Malaysian cuisine come alive. However I suggest the must order dish is .. the satay chicken skewers and the accompanying sauce.  It is AMAZING and a must order. The skewers are bit light on the meat but the sauce is so very tasty.   The satay sauce is a chunky satay, sweet chilli peanut based sauce.  I ordered the 6 skewers for $9. (above)

Mamak are really known for their Roti Bread.  There are many Roti bread choices to choose from.  I decided to choose the below options of original Roti (below), butter roti and the roti with red onion in triangles (below). I opted for the full vegetarian sauces so we could all share the roti. I would recommend the roti with butter (above). It’s beautifully fluffy and the most tasty.

The vegetarian curry was flavoursome and similar to the sauces with the roti. Great if you are a vegetarian. (below)

I also tried the Nasi Lemak (above) which accordingly to the menu is “arguably Malaysia’s home dish”. With sides of cucumber, crunchy anchovy, peanuts and chili sauce, there a pile of rice in the middle. I opted to pay for the fried chicken ($3 addition) to the dish based on the recommendation of the waitress. It was a highly textured dish with simple flavours. Malaysia’s home drink seems to be the hot chocolate or on the menu.. milo.. which I thought was odd.

The dessert called Cendol (below, $6) is very sugary. It's a syrup, coconut and shaved rice concuction with pandan noodles at the bottom. Make sure you get to the bottom to the pandan noodles. This is a favourite of my dining companions. If you are not a sugary fan then perhaps give it a miss.

Overall, I had a great experience and the bold flavours in Malaysian favourite – Mamak really made the experience. Bring cash if you want to avoid the 2% surcharge on card transactions.
