I found an absolute gem when I dined at Banjo Patterson Cottage in Gladesville. Whether you're a historical/literacy buff or a foodie, you will fall in love with the high quality experience at Banjo Patterson Cottage. The restaurant is where Banjo Patterson grew up and it's quite a pleasure. It's just a classic, white table cloth restaurant with riverside views.
I normally don't take note of the bread at the restaurant but I absolutely loved the pumpkin sour dough (below, complimentary).
For entree, my dining companion had the soup of the day which was potato and leek (above, $16) which was poured around a small piece of butter. The butter melted into the silky smooth soup and added that extra edge on the flavour. I also tried the scallops ($23.50, below). There were two scallops but quite big scallops on a bed of mashed peas and pancetta with a light fennel salsa. The scallops were perfectly cooked and were so tasty in their natural form without being tampered by any heavy sauces. I'd certainly recommend the scallops.
For mains ($38.50, top photo) was the Seared Kangaroo on a bed of spinach and mushrooms. On the menu, it was meant to come with roast pumpkin but there was none. Regardless, the kangaroo was perfectly cooked, moist, lean and delicious. I also ordered the braised lamb shoulder ($38.50, below) with wilted spinach, oyster mushrooms and potato and horse radish cream. The lamb was well cooked at medium rare and was layered into a small ball. What a pleasure to eat. I'd recommend both dishes.
Both mains were homely and so well executed. Delicious, absolutely delicious.
For dessert, I shared the hazelnut nougat ice crea terrine with creme anglaise and raspberry coulis (below, $16.80). A nice sugary way to end the meal. I loved it.
