Cruising for Chicks in the North Shore?? Chicken and Sons isn't your run-of-the-mill charcoal chook shop. You won't find the clinical looking setup and plastic community hall chairs you often see at many suburban establishments because this store changes the game completely.
Yes at Chicken and Sons – the spits are there, the mass production lines are there, but Chicken and Sons have taken all those old things we're use to seeing and expecting and twisted it all up into some clever little dishes, and a range of sides that could even stand on their own as meals as well as their own home made sodas! It's great fun!
At Chicken and Sons, there are long queues that spill out of the shop into the foot path and there are casual design setup consists of 3 long tables for groups or communal eating. To the side are single bar stools and a counter for some quick bite informal eating action. The location is a bit out of the way from the nearest train station, but a bus stop is literally outside their front door, and it seems to attract a strong loyal base of locals.
As you would guess from the name Chicken and Sons - It's all about Chicken here – but the menu seems to have been designed to cater to the beef burger lovers, vegetarians, and dare I say it (not sure) vegans, making it a very easy choice when looking for a place to satisfy a contrasting palette for your group meets.
At Chicken and Sons, you can get your spit roast chicken by the quarter, half or whole, but what completely steals the show are the very intricate accompaniments they offer that might rival Grandma's classic trimmings roast! Chicken is their staple – so of course its cooked flawlessly, having been in the game and in multiple locations for years!
Above is THE BEARDED BARISTA: Red Quinoa, Brown Rice, Roasted sweet potato, broccoli, pepitas, walnuts, baby spinach, Coffee Cumin dressing.
THE CAULIFLOWER COLLAPSE is a mix of roasted and natural cauli, pearl cous cous, pear, golden raisin with tactfully insertions of goat curd, mint and crostini crumb. I'm not a vegetarian – which is why it surprises me that I must recommend this as a must either as a side or on it's own. Such an interesting combination of flavours that you don't usually find together! Definitely my favourite!
While Chicken & Sons stays true to its name, this eatery also does well to accommodate its vegan, vegetarian and gluten free preferred customers.
Naturally, the burger glory in this place goes to their BIG BIRD with a breast fillet that seems to scream out of its bun and coated in a crispy batter with a slight kick. Again, you'll find double of everything here, chopped onion and some iceberg. Definitely the favorite of the night for me! Well done Chicken and Sons. I LOVE this one.
Home made patties, home made sauce, house dressing and so why not also make house made soda pop?
You've got to respect the creativity here because there are
some interesting flavours on offer. The BLACK FORREST soda of cherry and chocolate was so bizarre it left a strange after taste in my mouth yet I just wanted to keep sipping! It's almost hypnotic!
It was a bit warm out, but if I was ordering, I would have chosen the WHAT A LEMON which is watermelon, lime, lemon and mint - so refreshing, or THE HULA HULA -
pineapple, mango and papaya. These two tropical drinks
are my tips to be the favorite this summer!
