Sherpa Kitchen is a Nepalese restaurant located on King St in Newtown. It's been in Newtown for some time but the current owner has been there for about 18 months. Matt and I head here for a nice lunch.
There's gorgeous art work on the side of all things Nepalese that catch my eye. As it's a warm Saturday, I'm happy that there are a series of lunch specials. The lunch specials come with a choice of soft drink as well. I'm no expert in Nepalese cuisine but Matt is eager to try modern authentic Nepalese food.
Matt orders a Mango Lassi (Nepalese style) which has sweet and savoury mango tones. It's refreshing and is a great way to conquer any spicy dishes you may order. Be aware that it's not like an Indian Mango lassi so you may have to adjust your expectations. I opt for a diet coke.
Matt and I share a few entrees to start off with. First there's the Samosa Chat ($8.90) which is a smashed samosa mixed with mint, yoghurt and tamarind sauce. The creamy yoghurt with the tamarind sauce makes for a tasty and tangy flavour.
This is a simply delicious dish that I would highly recommend. This is Matt's favourite dish at Sherpa Kitchen.
I also order the Paneer Chilli (Chillies Way Piro) with Rice of Naan ($11.90). This dish is a Nepalese style grilled green chilli with paneer, capsicum, onion, tomatoes and spices. I requested a "medium" spice level. The paneer cheese is really delicious in that chilli. The sauce is not too spicy to begin with however the level of chilli lingers and then comes that hit of spice. I liked the spicy capsicum and onion in the dry sauce as well.
Matt and I have over ordered but we couldn't resist ordering some steamed momo's with a mild tomato chutney ($11.90). This dish is freshly prepared and home made with a thin skin with minced chicken/vegetables and is popular in Kathmandu Valley. The texture of the momo's are like chinese xiao long bao - it's a lighter pastry with the chicken minced filling.
Summary: So overall, if you're looking for modern authentic Nepalese food - why not check out Sherpa Kitchen? They have great lunch specials and if you've never had Nepalese food before then it's worth checking out. My favourite dishes are the samosa chat and also the paneer chilli.
Some of the other dishes were more foreign to me but I could tell Matt really liked trying something new.
