Hulu, Kingstreet Wharf - NOW CLOSED

New to King St Wharf is Hulu, a chinese restaurant with water views. Matt and I check out this venue recently and had a nice peak at all the Vivid cruises on the water. It's a cold winter night but it's all good because there is an inside area to sit or an outside area with heaters at Hulu.

Matt and I look at the menu and start ordering a number of dishes. I start with a number of dumpling dishes as they are my favourite. I start with these Crispy Cheese and Prawn Dumplings ($12.80) which come in a portion of 3. The skin is crispy but soft in the middle. These are really enjoyable to eat on their own or with a touch of chilli sauce. I couldn't really taste a prominent cheese taste, it was mostly a savoury minced prawn taste.

I also order the Nemo Dumplings ($12.80) which also come in a portion of three. These soft translucent dumplings are prawn dumplings similar to Har Gow. These dumplings are really cute but I eventually demolish them. The skin is silky smooth and the prawn filling is tasty with a bit of chilli sauce. I would recommend this dish.

Next up is the Deep Fried Crispy Pork Buns ($12.80) which also comes in a portion of 3.  Matt is in heaven as he bit into the soft crispy bun with the hot pork filling which is sweet. These buns are texturally so addictive as they are savoury and slightly sweet at the same time. Matt would definitely order this one again.

After eating some dumplings, I'm still waiting for my drinks. Perhaps it has taken some time as they are cocktails. Our drinks then arrive. I order a Singapore Sling ($19) and Matt orders a Hulu Special which has tequila, amaretto, baileys, bitters and ice cream which tastes very alcohol strong until the ice cream melts.  The cocktails are nice but I am not sure if they match the food well. Is there a lost opportunity to have Asian flavoured cocktails? Moutai cocktails perhaps.

We also order the Beef Cubes Japanese style with Wasabi mayo ($32.80).  The beef is succulent and flavoursome and so enjoyable to eat that we opt to eat this on its own rather than dip it into the mayo. It's also served up with mushrooms, red and green capsicum which soaks up all the flavours. This dish is delicious and you can also eat the crispy bowl that it's served in. 

The food is delicious and we are having a great time. It's at this point that there is a decent break of time (approx 40 minutes) and we are waiting for the next dish. I realise that perhaps there has been a mix up with what we have ordered. Perhaps it's best to repeat what you have ordered to avoid any confusion.

The final dish we try is the Tooth fish with shallot and ginger ($52.80). This dish is perfectly steamed and is incredibly flavoursome as it sits in a bed of sauce. The fish is light, flakey and has soaked in all those soy/fish sauce flavours along with the subtle ginger hints. This is a very delicious dish.

Summary: Overall, I thought the food was really delicious. All the dishes were really tasty including the dumplings and the beef cubes and steamed toothfish. Well done to the chef!

I think in terms of service, they just need to smooth out the drinks being served first and ensure orders are taken accurately. With these minor adjustments, I am sure this venue will do well with it's delicious food.
