Mr Wong, Sydney CBD

This is a delayed blog post! I was fortunate enough to enjoy a group dinner at Mr Wong. My work colleague often talks about fond he is and is a regular diner at Mr Wong so my expectations have slightly increased. I was looking forward to the upmarket Chinese banquet and the good company on this particular night.

Mr Wong is located down the alley way in Bridge Lane and has a Cantonese style menu in a beautifully decorated venue. It feels quite lavish and opulent.

I've been to yum cha at Mr Wong before and while it was an enjoyable experience, I prefer traditional yum cha venues. However on this occasion, I was dining at dinner time so I was eager to check out the menu. The group of people I am dining with put my full trust in ordering so I get to pick everything!

To start, I order the Hiramasa Kingfish ($23, top photo) with kohlrabi, sweet wasabi, soy and ginger dressing. The kingfish is refreshing to eat with the mellow soy and ginger dressing which seems to be more reflective of Japanese cuisine but I like the fusion on the menu. I ordered the Steamed Dim Sum Platter ($36) which has 8 pieces of dumplings because I knew it would be a crowd pleaser. These plump dumplings quickly disappeared and I had a chunky dumpling with a delicious prawn filling.

I also ordered the Peking Duck (Whole $98) because I knew it would also be a crowd pleaser. The duck arrives and you have to self-assemble to make duck pancakes. I assemble a few pancakes for the people nearby by starting with the savoury pancake, top it with the duck, cucumber, spring onion with a smear of hoi sin sauce. The whole duck peking pancakes caters for 16 portions. The duck is succulent and perfectly cooked. The skin is crispy with moist flesh and the flavour combinations are exactly on point.

I also enjoy the Salt and Pepper Calamari ($35) which has a very light coating which encases the calamari. There's a nice subtle salt and pepper flavouring which heroes the calmari dish. Again this dish is perfectly cooked and quickly enjoyed by the group.  These were the entree dishes that I had ordered for the group.

Now for the main dishes. The next dish is Mr Wong's Honey Chicken ($34) which arrives looking extremely delicious with its crunchy skin, noticable coating of seasoning of honey and white sesame seeds. I bite into the crunchy skin and can confirm, it tastes as good as it looks. Definitely one to order if you like fried chicken. We also have the Sweet and Sour Crispy Pork Hock ($36). This dish has the expected sticky sauce which always triggers my taste buds. I like the Crispy Eggplant with fish fragrant sauce ($28) as it has a nice coating for textural contrast to the other dishes. I enjoy all the different flavours in my mouth and the different textures that contrast. It was also hard to resist the Mr Wong Singapore Noodles with pork and prawn ($32). I'm impressed by the quality of all these dishes and would recommend all for their flavours.

The Angus beef cubes ($44) has wok fried kampot black pepper and onions. It's a hard dish to resist and the group also enjoy the Kung Pao Chicken ($34) which has a nice but tolerable spicy hit. From the mains, I would not have a favourite but would recommend all of them as they are all prepared to a high standard.

For dessert, I share.... the Mr Wong's Deep Fried Vanilla Ice cream with butterscotch sauce ($21) and the Mango Pudding with coconut tapioca, lychee granita with mango pearls ($19). I enjoy the crispy coating of the deep fried ice cream and the creamy vanilla ice cream. It's the mango pudding that particularly seduces my tastebuds though. I like the lychee granita and mango pearls which definitely make this dessert posh. It's a winner.

Summary: Overall, I thoroughly enjoy my banquet at Mr Wong. It's a great venue to host a group of people for up-market modern Cantonese cuisine. The price point puts this into the "A bit Posh" category to match it's opulent decore, perfectly executed food and excellent customer service.

All the dishes were absolutely fabulous but if I had to pick my favourites, I would probably choose the kingfish, calamari, pekking duck, crispy eggplant, honey chicken and the mango pudding. Sorry! I couldn't pick any one dish.... too many fab ones.
