GBG Korean BBQ, West Ryde





Korean BBQ is such a great experience, for me - I love eating all the sides, the smell from the sizzling meat and also the social setting with friends or family. There's a new Korean BBQ in West Ryde called  Gyeong Bok Gung (Or you can call it GBG). 

It's a cold and rainy day when I visit GBG and I'm thankful for the rain as our Country definitely needs the water. GBG is located on Victoria Rd, right nearby the West Ryde Hotel. As I walk in, I notice how spacious and big the restaurant is. There's large tables and smaller tables which is good if you are dining with a group of friends. 



GBG has an extensive menu and accompanying the Korean BBQ is an extensive set of sides. There are over 12 side dishes that arrive on the table, varying from kim chi, boiled eggs, tofu, pickled cucumber, Jap Chae (glass noodles), salad, bean sprouts and spicy greens. WOW. I am very impressed by the extensive range of sides. The only missing side I am thinking of is the traditional mashed potato that is slightly sweet but I LOVE the fact that there are so many sides. I love the sides.




Of the sides, my favourite include Jap Chae which has fungi mushroom with soft glass noodles. I enjoy the kim chi and spicy greens which give you a bit of a kick and flavour contract to the meat.




GBG also offers a complimentary egg pot when you are ordering Korean BBQ off the menu. The egg is fluffy, light in texture and airey. I notice on the menu it says there's a minimum order of two meat dishes which is adequate for 2-3 people. There's also a salad with a sweet creamy dressing which makes for great flavour contrast to the sizzling meat.







The first dish meat dish we order is 2 servings of the marinated pork ($22 per serving). This was recommended by the staff. The staff prepare the Korean BBQ which is made from real charcoal for that authentic smokey taste. The grill heats up and we put the marinated pork onto the grill.... then it quickly starts to cook. The meat starts sizzling and we turn over the meat, there's some delicious grill marks on the pork. Mr Weekend Food Escapes cuts up the pork into small pieces and I start eating the marinated pork. I really enjoy the smokey flavours from the charcoal and depth of flavour from the pork. It's delicious and it smells AMAZING.




We also order a serve of the Wagyu Short Rib ($36) which is usually one of my favourite types of meat to order. The short rib starts sizzling straight away and cooks quite quickly. I eat the wagyu short rib along with some of the sauce and the kim chi. I enjoy the contrast of flavours and it's very delicious. The 2 servings of marinated pork and 1 serving wagyu short rib are two great options that would feed 2-3 people.





The staff also tell me that a popular addition to the sizzling meats are the Stews, I order the soybean paste stew with beef ($15). The hot pot comes out with a spicy broth and a number of vegetables and beef. The stew is very comforting and matches in flavour. This would one to really enjoy in colder weather.


Summary: Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Gyeong Bok Gung (GBG). The venue is spacious and the Korean BBQ menu is delicious. The highlight has to be the number and quality of the sides!! I enjoyed both marinated pork and the wagyu beef short rib.

  2. This Korean Buffet restaurant is very terrible. Staffs are awful. My family and I recently went to this terrible restaurant. We haven't finished food the female staff came and she was staring at us and put the food away. She said we won't finish it. And we have to go in half hours. It is almost time for us to eat. I have never encountered a waiter and waitress with such a low emotional intelligence. I feel disrespected. I hate this restaurant. I will never go there again in my life. After this incident, I feel scared when I see Koreans.
