Firepop Meal Kit Review

For the last 14 years, Firepop is usually a pop up restaurant appearing across Sydney.  Given the Corona restrictions, they have now expanded their business and are now offering meal kits so you can make your own Firepops at home.

The delivery arrived with social distancing which was comforting. The box was put on a crate for me to pick up while the delivery person stood a good 2 metres back. I immediately put the pack into the fridge and decide to cook them up tomorrow.

I recently was gifted an OG pack which has
  • Lamb firepops (20 for $39),
  • Three different levels of chilli spice including mild kashmiri chilli, hot guntur chilli and extra hot bird's eye chilli
  • A special OG Dukkah spice mix pack
  • A pair of disposal gloves
The firepops are inspired by the Street Food of North East China from the communities of XinJiang.  The meat is halal certified if you are wondering.

Mr Weekend Food Escapes takes the lead in preparing the Firepops. He notes that he believes he has quite a strong chilli tolerance. He diligently follows the instructions, warms up the BBQ and prepares the firepops.

The Firepops smell like they have such a smokey flavour and are cooking nicely on the BBQ. So what's the verdict?

The spicy levels are quite nice and the highest spice level really pushed my limits. It was a nice burn on the palette.

The OG Dukkah mix had an uncomfortable smell while cooking but came to life once cooked. Mr Weekend Food Escapes enjoyed something different, never having the OG Dukkah flavouring on a meat skewer before. Although he notes he would be happy with the three levels of spice alone without the OG Dukkah mix.

Overall, the benefit of the Firepop Meal kit is obviously convenience with ready made meat skewers and unique ingredients in the spices.  It all comes together quite nicely to make for a unique Northern Chinese meal!

I personally haven't made any meat skewers myself so I welcome any convenience options.

Weekend Food Escapes was gifted this mealkit. All photos, opinions and words are my own.
