Sushi Hotaru, Sydney

I'm a regular at sushi hotaru; not because of the average customer service or sometimes long queues but I think it's reasonably priced and consistent  and tasty sushi.  The sashimi is not bad.  If you're average weighted or even remotely chubby, stick to the sushi train seats as you'll struggle to fit into their booths. They are only made for the very thin.

Order your dishes on screens and sushi magically appears.

I like the eel nigiri, prawn tempura roll and the grilled scallop nigiri.  I felt a bit ripped off with the scrap of salmon in the salmon roll on this particular occasion.  A nice venue for a quick bite but don't come here if you want a leisurely, long lunch or dinner.

I like this place :)

Price: $3 per plate, more for sashimi or dishes like udon

Yenisu Izakaya, Sydney

The earl gray creme brulee was tasty but it had a honey skin crackle which seem to take away from the actual taste of the earl gray.  I'm indifferent actually about that dessert.  I would consider ordering it again maybe on another night.

Don't even bother with the ice cream with donut balls. It was not tasty. Fail. Medium Fail (not epic fail).

I'll have to come back here and try some of the non-dessert food.
Earl Gray Creme Brulee - about $6

Fail -> ice cream with donut balls about $9

wooden utensils anyone?

Nazimi, Sydney

Nazimi is located in a very central location in Town Hall, just behind the Queen Victoria Basement.  You walk down a few stairs and then you are in a secret little hole of Japanese food.

Prices: about 15-20 per person

Location: 141 York St, Sydney

Sushi is good
My friends and I ordered a delicious side of salmon avocado roll and the sashimi small size.  The Sashimi and Sushi is fresh and consistently prepared well.

Sashimi is solid
Tofu was rawry yummy
The tofu was really nice.  A favourite of Japanese lovers is always the tofu agedashi because of the full flavours that make the smushy tofu textures outside tasty and equally the soft tofu on the inside very easy to eat.

For something not as common, I had the Salmon Teriyaki Udon. It was very filling and really nice to eat. The salmon taste fades a little bit though but the Udon flavours are quite nice so I didn't mind.

I think the food is very reasonably priced as well.  Check it out for a casual eat.

Mr Wong, Sydney

I read another review which read "pretentious posh yum cha for white people".  I thought that was quite entertaining but I'd probably add to this " Nice bar attempts posh yum cha". I felt like I should have been drunk sitting in the hole in the wall venue.

The verdict - the jasmine tea was really nice. The chinese mushroom dumplings were tasty.  The rest, to be honest I didn't particularly enjoy.  I honestly would have preferred traditional yum cha at one of the other restaurants.

Overall pricey. I'd come back and try the dinner but I thought the yum cha experience was over rated.  I'd consider just coming here to get drunk though.

Price: About 30-40 per person

Chinese Mushroom Dumplings - Tasty but overpriced

Scallop and Prawn Shumai - It was OK - it takes away the true taste of the tasty scallop

Prawn Toast with Foie gras and Almonds - I wasn't a fan

Angelino Pizzeria, Waterloo

I came over to my friend's place after we were both bored and somewhat over men.  We settled for a movie full of porn "The Wolf of Wall Street" accompanied by some thin crusted tasty pizza.

The pizza was basically perfect. The right amount of cheese, toppings and didn't leave you too bloated. We devoured the pizzas as we engaged in "girl" talk and talked about the exploits of Leonard Di Caprio. When you order delivery, it takes about an hour.  Being a very popular joint - you shouldn't be too surprised.

I loved both pizzas, the Mediterranean and the Bello. A good night.  Tunez.

Prices: About 15 per pizza for a Medium

Marigold, Sydney

I haven't been to the Marigold for a long time.  I used to go here all the time but seem to switch to The Eight.  I decided to come back here and surprisingly fell back comfortably into yum cha tasty land.  The food here is consistent, the decore hasn't changed for almost ten years and it's reasonable in price.

I love it.  I will have to go back here. Yummo.

Price: about 20 per person

International Nippon Club, Sydney (now closed)

Some times you time travel back into a restaurant - the decore is out dated; it has a slightly stale environment and everyone seems to be over 60.  The sashimi is tasty, the rolls are tasty but there is no wow factor. For me, the food is very important, customer service is important but also dining should be an experience and I guess I was put off by decore and traditional vibe from the waitstaff.

Next time, I'll go back to my favourite Kansai. That's more of an experience.

Prices : about 30 per person
