ESS Roof Top Bar @ Governor Hotel, Macquarie Park

Governor Hotel in Macquarie Park has a roof top bar called ESS and is hosting Mexican Happy Hours on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Woo Hoo!
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, you can enjoy $3 tacos all day. Then there's the $6 Margaritas and $6 Seis Hermanos Mexican Lagers that you can order from 4pm to 7pm. This sounds good to me baby!

The Governor Hotel has a courtesy bus as well for locals within 5kms in the evening which is good for the locals. Matt and I start off our evening with a $6 Margarita and also a cocktail The Hills ($18) which has vodka, malibu, lychee and is topped with a coconut halo.  The Margarita is one of my favourite cocktails as I enjoy the salty rim contrast with the sweet and sour liquid body. The Hills cocktail is a smooth and fruity cocktail which Matt enjoys.

The ESS rooftop bar has a different menu to the dining menu downstairs. I immediately notice the Cheese Burger Spring Rolls ($10 for 4). They are served with pickles and tomato sauce which remind me of cheese burgers! The cheese burger spring rolls have a crispy pastry shell and a minced beef filling. My favourite Cheese Burger Spring Rolls is definitely from Ms G, these ones from the ESS roof top bar are still tasty in comparison.

The ESS rooftop bar also has Green ESS Bowl ($17) which has chicken, zucchini noodles, avocado puree, broccoli, kale, ponzu and pepitas. This green bowl is absolutely flavoursome. I typically stay clear of green bowls and prefer more naughty food but this dish was one of my favourites surprisingly. The contrast of textures from the crunchy broccoli and kale contrast nicely with the softer noodles, puree. The dressing is what brings this dish together. I recommend!

I could not leave the ESS rooftop bar without ordering one of each of the $3 tacos. The portion size of the taco is quite considerable for $3. You have your choice from

  • Smoked Brisket - Iceburg lettuce, sour cream, smokey mexican bbq sauce
  • Spicy Chicken - Cajun, shredded lettuce, refried beans, avo, tomato salsa and cheese
  • Vegetarian - Avocado salsa, tomato salsa, lettuce, refried beans and cheese
  • Fish - Iceburg lettuce, tomato salsa, avocado, coriander, chilli and lime dressing
My favourite taco is definitely the smoked brisket with the delicious smokey BBQ sauce. The brisket is smoked offsite but still retains it's the flavours. I also quite enjoyed the Fish taco.

As the tacos are quite filling, I think i've over ordered. There's always room for pizza though, we are recommended by the staff to order the Capricciosa ($26) which has a tomato base, mozzarella, leg ham, artichoke, dried black olives, mushrooms, parmesan and basil oil. This pizza is really delicious with a thin base and soft crust (which I really like). This type of base and pizza crust is more authentic and allows you to really taste the toppings. The pizza is tops.

Summary: Overall, I really enjoyed the Happy Hour at ESS Roof Top Bar at the Governor Hotel. I didn't realise the Governor Hotel existed as there are limited options in Macquarie Park. I thought the tacos were really good value at $3. The Margaritas at $6 were great as well.
My favourite dishes were the pizza and that green bowl.

Price: Tacos $3 on the roof top Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Other mains varied from $17 to $26
