Unaya, Wentworth Point

It's been some time since I've been to Wentworth Point but now there's a whole set of shops and restaurants now open. I am invited to Asian Fusion Japanese restaurant Unaya on this particular Saturday.

Unaya is located very close to the ferry wharf of Olympic Park so if you sit outside you actually have a waterview. The shop front is very direct and reads "Unaya - Burger and rice" which is reflective of their new menu which is primarily focused on burgers and rice dishes.

Matt orders an Asahi Beer ($8.90) while I treat myself to a watermelon crush ($7.90). There's an array of other mocktails to enjoy as well or you can BYO wine for $2.50 corkage.

Matt and I order some side dishes including the seaweed salad ($6.90) which has seaweed, cabbage, carrot, slaw, cherry tomato with roasted sesame dressing and a thick mayonnaise. I enjoy the refreshing seaweed at the top and I pick at the coleslaw like salad below. We also order a side of onion rings ($3.90) which consists of about 5 battered onion rings with a drizzle of mayonnaise. The batter is quite light and as I bite in, I can see it's red onion.

As Unaya has mostly burgers and rice dishes, I naturally order one of the rice dishes - the Crispy Chicken Rice Bowl ($13.90) which has 5 pieces of deep dried chicken, broccoli, pickled carrot, cherry tomato, sesame seed, japanese pepper, maple chilli sauce on white steamed rice. The chicken is not quite as crispy as anticipated as the maple chilli sauce has softened the texture. The rice bowl is enjoyable to eat with simple flavours.

Unaya has a few burger options. While I'm tempted to get the rice burger where the bread buns are replaced by rice, I decide to get the wagyu steak burger ($15.90) which has wagyu steak, sunny fried egg, onion jam, lettuce, smashed avo, pickles, sweet potato crisps, wasabi mayonnaise on a brioche burger bun. I like the sweet potato crispy strands as I bite into this burger. The burger is not a traditional burger. The flavour combination is definitely Asian Fusion with sweet and savoury tones.

We finish the meal with some pork belly skewers ($4.90 for 2). The pork skewers are in a rich marinade and are quite flavoursome but mildly rubbery in texture.

Summary: Overall the meal at Unaya was solid. The food is reasonably priced if you are looking for a casual meal. While it's not quite Japanese, the food is Japanese inspired but you can taste other Asian tones in the food. You can also find western dishes on the menu, particularly in the sides.

Price: Most mains $14-18

  1. How tasty it looks. I really want to try it now. But after all, it is very bad for health, especially for men's health, and what about smoking, I read here that this is not the best option.
