Mordeo Bar and Bistro, Sydney CBD

Mordeo Bar and Bistro is a hidden little gem at the bottom of a large office building in Sydney CBD. Matt and I have date night at Mordeo Bar and Bistro recently. I had never been here before....

The decore at Mordeo Bar and Bistro is dimly lit, cosy and inviting. I look around and I see a few office workers, a few tables of girls who seem to be catching up and enjoying themselves and a few couples as well.                                                           Matt and I cheers to some drinks. I really needed a drink after a stressful day at work. Matt tries a really refreshing but unique Agave Cider with ginger. Something a bit different. I opt for a nice glass of Torbreck 'The Steading' which is a mix of grenache, shiraz and mataro ($16). I love my red wines especially those with some depth and peppery tones. After some contemplation, Matt and I order some dishes off the menu with some recommendations from the friendly staff.

We naturally over order and enjoy a nice range of entrees. The first being the Hummus with wood fired bread ($12). THe Hummus is glistening in the light and I catch myself smacking my lips while Matt is taking photos. The wood fired bread makes for the perfect way to dip into that light and earthy hummus.

The staff tell me that one of the most popular entrees is the Crispy Lamb Riblets ($16) with rosemary salt and yoghurt dressing. The lamb is so tender and melt in your mouth - a reflection of the high quality produce and how well it's been cooked. The rosemary salt makes it quite addictive really. They go down really well with my wine. I highly recommend ordering this dish.

Matt is also really keen on ordering the Chorizo Croquettes ($19) with manchego, pickled vegetables, watercress and smoked paprika aioli. Croquettes are always so comforting as they are crunchy on the outside and warm, soft and flavoursome on the inside. Matt loves chorizo so he can't resist.

More entrees are ordered including the Grilled Cypriot Haloumi ($15) with caper berry, watermelon and sour dough. I really like this dish as the salty haloumi contrasts well with the refreshing water melon and thai basil pieces. I'm a lover of haloumi so while it's a simple dish - I really like it. This dish is very easy to share as well.

So while the entrees were amazing, Matt and I agree that the highlight of this dish is the 12 hour Roast Beef Short rib ($36) which is the grass fed  MSA graded angus cattle, roasted in their wood fire oven served with smoked mash potato and pickled vegetables and jus. This dish is just perfection on a plate. The meat is well glazed and slow cooked so the meat is very melt in  your mouth and incredibly flavoursome and delicious. The silky mash with the crunchy onion is also the perfect side. This is an absolute must order dish.

For a bit of contrast, I also order the Chilli Calamari Wood Fired Pizza which is hand stretched ($25) with tomato, olives, capers, chilli, fior di latte mozarella, squid. If you're a fan of wood fired pizzas then you'll really enjoy the pizza bases. There is a nice topping to base ratio and this pizza is very cheesey.

Summary: Mordeo is a great place for date night or a catch up with friends for dinner. My favourite dishes were definitely the 12 hour Roast Beef Short rib, Crispy Lamb Riblets and Haloumi. I highly recommend! Enjoy!!!
