La Sen, Randwick

La Sen is a Vietnamese Restaurant located in Randwick. So Eastern Suburbs folks, don't worry - you won't have to travel to Cabramatta or Bankstown for some authentic Vietnamese.

La Sen is a more upmarket compared to your traditional Vietnamese Restaurant in Cabramatta or Bankstown. I head to La Sen on a slightly cold day so I'm already thinking some warm Pho (Noodle Soup) to warm me up. I love Vietnamese cuisine because it's always full of fresh herbs and never feels too heavy.

Let's get stuck into the entrees!

The Spring Rolls (4 for $9.90, above photo) were so delicious and absolutely perfect in texture. The spring rolls are wrapped in rice paper so they are ultra crunchy. I absolutely enjoyed the spring rolls that wrapped the carrot, taro, wood ear mushroom and mung bean noodle. I strongly recommend ordering this dish.

Banh Cuon, a popular Vietnamese dish consisting of flat rice noodle which wraps minced pork or beef is very enjoyable to eat. La Sen served up a more modern version with strips of lemon grass beef (below, $6.90). The rice noodles are so soft. I think I would prefer the traditional minced pork but the lemon grass beef was still nice.

Now for the Mains! It's getting colder and there's nothing more comforting than a big bowl of Pho Noodle soup. La Sen has a premium Wagyu Beef Pho Noodle Soup ($16.90, top photo and above/below photo) that will warm you up.

The beef cooks slowly in the hot broth along with the other pieces of raw onion. Once you add a bit of chilli, thai basil and lemon (and bean sprouts if you like, I don't like them) then you should be on a great flavour journey. The broth is clean and light so you can add more depth with the hoi sin and chilli sauce for more flavour. I love the hoi sin and chilli combination.

You can also get the usual Pho Tai (Rare Beef) or Pho Ga (chicken) for $12.90 if that tickles your fancy.

Another homely dish which I'd suggest is the Chicken Curry (below, $15.90). In Vietnam, they typically don't use coconut milk but La Sen dresses this traditional recipe up with coconut milk while maintaining smooth mild yellow curry flavours. The pieces of chicken are very succulent. The pieces of carrot and potato soak up the curry sauce and eat well with the side of rice ($2.00).

Overall, I had a really nice dining experience at La Sen. The locals at Randwick are lucky to have such a nice Vietnamese restaurant nearby for those fresh herby Vietnamese dishes.

The highlights were definitely the spring rolls and the premium wagyu pho. The prices are reasonable for the portions and you can't go wrong on a cold day for a big bowl of pho. Drop by if you are in the area!!
